I wanted to do a Bahamian Independence show featuring Urban Artists but depression floored me. Hopefully by July 10 I will have the mental capacity to get up and do something. With that said, July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.
National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month was created to bring awareness to the unique struggles that underrepresented groups face when it comes to mental illness in the US.
I live with depression. I don’t know where it stems from or how to get rid of it. Each day is a battle to live. However 2020-2021 has been the worst I have ever experienced. It’s gotten so bad I can see it on my face. Music doesn’t even tame the beast inside anymore. I am so troubled that my vices are too much to indulge in. The thing is people like me we don’t get help, we battle with it until it takes us out, because of the stigma connected to the idea of depression. Depression is for the weak minded! I heard that all my life. Or my favorite that some soft sh!t… I can’t talk about it or my social pages or afford to pay someone to listen to my cry about feelings, not when I have real bills.
Sad, but true. Hundreds of thousands of people suffer daily, masking their pain with parties, jokes, liquor and a good time, all the while EMPTY inside searching for normal. This month I invite you to ask a friend how they are doing mentally. You may just get a surprise.
