Finally Being Seen: The Sound of Culture

The feeling of invisibility can be overwhelming, like a heavy cloud that hangs over one’s existence, casting a shadow on every interaction and experience. Many people experience moments when they feel unheard, as if their words are lost in the void, unnoticed, as though they are merely a ghost passing through the world, or unappreciated, where their efforts and contributions seem to vanish into thin air without acknowledgment. For the first time, I had an opportunity to support a family member who shares the same passion for arts and culture as I do, a rare and cherished connection that brought a sense of belonging and mutual understanding. On Friday, Dec 6, 2024, I found myself at a sonically breathtaking event, an auditory feast that captivated the senses and stirred the soul, with all the makings of a masterpiece, a true testament to creativity and innovation. Technique Record in Miami, Florida, served as the vibrant backdrop for Art Basel 24 Horizon, an event powered by the visionary Okayfuture Labs. The mixed media event was a dynamic fusion of sound and vision, featuring DJs, Selectors, and Producers spinning live on CDJs and Vinyl, their artistry broadcast to an online audience, creating a shared experience that transcended physical boundaries. The hybrid event explored the rich and diverse sounds of culture through black music, a powerful expression of identity and heritage, ranging from the pulsating beats of dance to the rhythmic grooves of dancehall.

Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the event through a series of candid photographs expertly taken by Africa Allah of Agency by PlayMas.Today. The Evolving Soundscape: A Shift in Cultural Narratives

In recent years, we’ve seen a shift in how cultural stories are being told. More creators are stepping out of traditional narratives and embracing their backgrounds. This brings fresh perspectives and diverse experiences to mainstream media. Audiences are now craving authenticity. They want to see their lives represented truthfully.

The Need for Inclusive Storytelling: Beyond Tokenism

Genuine representation involves more than simply adding a character from a different background. It encompasses depth, subtlety, and authentic experiences. Tokenism implies that a culture is merely a decorative backdrop, rather than a complex tapestry of history and voices. Although token characters might suggest diversity, they often fail to capture the essence of that culture, resulting in misunderstandings and stereotypes. Art Basel 24 Horizon provided a platform to delve into culture through sound, offering creators the chance to share their influences.

Defining Cultural Authenticity in Sound

Beyond Stereotypes: Understanding Nuance and Complexity

Cultural authenticity means recognizing that every culture is complex. It involves moving past stereotypes to capture the true essence of an experience. Each culture has its nuances, which help in telling more profound stories.

The Role of Music, Language, and Soundscapes in Cultural Identity

Music, language, and sound shape cultural identity. They are expressions of heritage, emotions, and community. For instance, a film that understands and incorporates native music can create a powerful connection with its audience. This helps viewers relate more to on-screen experiences.
