I have been thinking about death a lot over the last few months. With the global pandemic. I think it was right around the George Floyd murder that I started loosing my shit, that coupled with the evidence that the government globally has no real solution for this virus.
Fear started to kick in, bills continued to pile and people just kept dying. Strong, healthy people. I watched the toughest of men be brought to their knees in pain. I know for sure my next battle with death, I won’t win and I damn sure ain’t going back to living on the streets like an animal. So, for me if I can’t swim or stay above water, there is only one way out. I don’t care how that sounds, because the professional we pay to hear our trauma need saving themselves. At this time it is survival of the fittest.
I have been sad! You can hear it in my voice and see it on my face. You can hear it in my sets. Today show is a mix the represents the nothingness I am feeling.

It goes without saying that we all had big plans as to what this year would bring. We walked into 2020 with a certainty that this would be our year, but then a global pandemic emerged, followed by unprecedented job loss and one of the greatest social justice uprisings of modern times.
Although many of this year’s events were unplanned, it is important to always look for the lesson or blessing in the unknown. Today’s guest aligns with this message and believes in the power of pivoting in order to break societal barriers and redefine resilience.

Whether you are knocking on the door of olderhood or you are just starting. your very first job, which actually pays into your pension fund, NOW is the time to start thinking about your retirement years.
Many of us will (or maybe not) receive a government pension cheque when we have decided to retire from working. Others will have private pension cheques due to us during those years.
If you are blessed to receive both or one, it is time for you to start thinking about how much money you will need in your olderhood because if that number is GREATER THAN the project value of your pension account at that time.
We need to start thinking of alternative ways to get you the money you need when you’ve decided to step out of the working world.
In this episode, I am sharing with you basic information on pensions plus giving my recommendations on when you should start caring about your fund/account balance.
My conversation today is with artist, author, legal scholar and activist Olave Nduwanje. Working across anti-racism, LGBTQ rights, anti-capitalism and disability movements, Olave brings to this conversation a wonderfully expansive understanding of Blackness, queerness and trans identities. Olave calls us to an understanding of Blackness that is capacious, that contains within it the possibilities of everything we are and can be – and she offers that so many of the ideas we’ve internalised about our Blackness are inherently anti-Black.
Olave discusses how her trans body is read by white and Black people alike, as an indication of some promised future; how she’s using her artistic practice to explore intra-communal conversations about intimacy and race; and why solidarity isn’t solidarity, unless you’re willing to give something up. Olave suggests that when we die, we’ll care more about whether we showed up for people than the things we surrounded ourselves with.
Be sure to check out “Olave Talks“.
This conversation forms part of a special series funded by the European Cultural Foundation to explore queer Black solidarity across Europe during the Covid-19 crisis.
